The Seattle Seafair Pirates Official Web Site - Pirate Kings of the Northwest since 1949 It's a high-humored heist by the Seattle SEAFAIR Pirates. The salty troupe's shenanigans and formidable float, the Duck, have become synonymous with SEAFAIR revelry. The Pirates, originally members of the Washington State Press Club's Ale & Quail Society, banded together in 1949 to promote Seattle and Seafair while having fun and serving the community. Despite their bad-guy image, the Pirates make dozens of appearances annually to hospitals and nursing homes. During the height of Seattle's SEAFAIR Celebration, they appear at several events and parades each day. The 40+ Pirates are an elite troupe who carefully selects their members based on their ability to mix well with the public and for their unique musical or theatrical talents.

Q: How does a pirate become Captain Kidd?

A: A pirate can be Captain Kidd for only one year in his pirate career. He is elected by the pirates to be their leader when in public and in costume. He is the only pirate you will see wearing a red coat and three cornered hat, which is a tradition. His first day as Captain is the landing at Alki Beach. This years Captain is Gary Kuhn.

Q: How cam the pirate pins are different colors each year?

A: It is the Captain's choice. They are usually his high school or college colors. (if he can remember back that far!)

Q: How do the pirates get their costumes?

A: Each pirate has his own clothes made personally. This is done at his own expense. By each pirate formulating his own costume, it makes for the color and diversity of our motley crew.

Q: How do the pirates get their nicknames?

A: Some were given their nicknames by their Mothers, like "Dogmeat"! Some for what they do as pirates , like, "The Spider Man", who has a scary pet spider! Then there's "The Shark", who scares everyone! we also have "Foghorn". who sings the song, "South Australia".

Q: Does Seafair Incorporated fund the pirates?

A: No! The pirates and other Seafair families, like the clowns, get no funds from Seafair. The pirates are self supported by the members and some very kind business owners. (Like the ones advertising in this magazine! Please give them your support. Thank you!)

Q: Aren't the pirates just a rowdy bunch of guys?

A: No. See the article titled, "The Leisure Man's Lunch".

Q: How many pirates are there?

A: The number changes from time to time, but there are currently about twenty five.

Q: I heard the pirates were in the Cayman Islands. What were they doing so far away?

A: Attending Pirates Week festivities which take place the last week in October each year. The pirates entertain tourists from around the world. But our favorite place is right here in The Great Northwest!

Q: How old do you need to be, to be a pirate?

Q: You must never really grow up!!
