The Seattle Seafair Pirates Official Web Site - Pirate Kings of the Northwest since 1949 It's a high-humored heist by the Seattle SEAFAIR Pirates. The salty troupe's shenanigans and formidable float, the Duck, have become synonymous with SEAFAIR revelry. The Pirates, originally members of the Washington State Press Club's Ale & Quail Society, banded together in 1949 to promote Seattle and Seafair while having fun and serving the community. Despite their bad-guy image, the Pirates make dozens of appearances annually to hospitals and nursing homes. During the height of Seattle's SEAFAIR Celebration, they appear at several events and parades each day. The 40+ Pirates are an elite troupe who carefully selects their members based on their ability to mix well with the public and for their unique musical or theatrical talents.

"CHANGING WITH THE TIMES"

Many people have asked how the Seattle Seafair Pirates have lasted for 43 years.

To answer such a question, one would have to look back several years and have kept their ears open to the history of the organization as told through stories by club elders.

A few things I have noticed that have cropped up repeatedly is how much the members love to be Seattle Seafair Pirates.

Ask anybody who is or has been a pirate and you'll hear many of their favorite stories told with a gleam in the eyes and a poet's tone in the voice.

Such are the makings of a Seattle Seafair Pirate.  Hidden within these personal projects  is modesty and charity that often goes without notice.

The Seattle Seafair Pirates through the years, have raised hundreds of thousands of dollars for charities such as The Variety Club, The Special Olympics, and The Seattle homeless, among many others, unlike the pirates of yesteryear, the Seattle Seafair Pirates give virtually everything away to charities. In lean times, it can make it difficult to attend some of the area festivals and other events, when it entails an appearance of our trademark and eternal liability, the "MOBY DUCK". Moby Duck costs the club approximately $5,000 annually, but that's another story.

The Seattle Seafair Pirates have lasted for more than four decades with a lot of change, both in crew members, and direction.  The Pirates of the 50's only operated for the Seafair festivities The Pirates of the 90's are busy 365 days of the year. We do dozens of parades, visit retirement homes, hospitals, and feed the homeless during the cold winter months.

Yes, the Seattle Seafair Pirates change with the times and that is why they'll be around for many years to come.
