The Whole Island is Just One Big Party
Actually, in Cayman it's pronounced "Partee." But no matter how you say it there is no doubt that the people Of Grand Cayman know how to make pirates feel right at home. This year marks the 19th annual Pirates Week Festival in Grand Cayman, an all out celebration of Cayman's rich buccaneer heritage.
Begun in 1977 Pirates Week is a festival focusing both on the Island's culture and it's notorious reputation as a haven for pirates.
Mike Lockwood, Executive Director of Pirates Week recalls; "The Festival was born of the feeling that we should recognize the rich heritage of our lovely islands, as a benefit to tourism and to provide resident and tourist alike with a unique opportunity to peek into Cayman's past.
Of Course in the 17th century the sight of a pirate sail would have sent terror through the islands. Today when we witness the pirate invasion we can rest assured that good will triumph over evil and the black-hearted buccaneers will be tried and banished from our island once more."
"Black-hearted Buccaneers," that's us, the Seafair Pirates. For the past twelve years it has been our great pleasure to participate in the Pirate's Week festivities. We cannot thank the people of Grand Cayman enough for their generosity and kindness. Somehow, each year we are made to feel even more welcome in this pirate's paradise.
Fans of the Seafair Pirates Landing here in Seattle would feel right at home in Cayman too. Pirates Week kicks off with a landing, not unlike our own, in the Georgetown harbor complete with cannon-fire, swordplay, and a Spanish Galleon!
Having spread our tale of terror, the pirates capture the Royal Governor, and run riot through the town in the parade which follows the landing. Over the next week the pirates enjoy their conquest laying claim to each district in turn at their local Heritage Celebrations.
When not raiding restaurants, resorts and other normally respectable establishments the Seafair Pirates are doing uncharacteristic good works, visiting schools and hospitals. But justice will out and eventually we pirates are captured and tried for our crimes against the good people of Cayman. It all ends with our being deported yet again. Naturally, we'll be back again next year.
In a long and happy partnership like that between the Seafair Pirates and the Pirates Week Festival in Grand Cayman many good friends are made. Not least of these are Mike Lockwood and Colin Wilson. Our host in Cayman, Mike Lockwood, is the Director of Pirates Week and served as Davy Jones XXXIII during Seafair 1985. And the sometime mock Royal Governor, Colin Wilson, was the divine emperor Davy Jones XXXV in 1987. Look for Colin in our pirate crew again this Seafair season.
