The Seattle Seafair Pirates Official Web Site - Pirate Kings of the Northwest since 1949 It's a high-humored heist by the Seattle SEAFAIR Pirates. The salty troupe's shenanigans and formidable float, the Duck, have become synonymous with SEAFAIR revelry. The Pirates, originally members of the Washington State Press Club's Ale & Quail Society, banded together in 1949 to promote Seattle and Seafair while having fun and serving the community. Despite their bad-guy image, the Pirates make dozens of appearances annually to hospitals and nursing homes. During the height of Seattle's SEAFAIR Celebration, they appear at several events and parades each day. The 40+ Pirates are an elite troupe who carefully selects their members based on their ability to mix well with the public and for their unique musical or theatrical talents.

A Pirates Life for Me

As a native of the Emerald City, and a Member of his illustrious group for the past 19 years it is with great pride that I serve as this year's Captain Kidd.

While working in the area of Lake Union I frequently stopped by the Latitude 47' restaurant for a light libation. This is where I came in contact with a group of fun loving people that I soon recognized as the Seattle Seafair Pirates. It appeared that these guys were always enjoying themselves and having lots of fun. I must admit that I felt a little left out. I made the acquaintance of a Mr. Jim Duffy who agreed to act as my sponsor. For those of you that arc unaware, every would-be pirate must get a member to act as a guide through the murky waters of a full calendar year of candidacy.

The candidate year is considered by many members to be the most enjoyable year of being a pirate. For me I'm not sure that it was the most enjoyable, but it was adventurous.

One time Moby Duck was parked outside of a church, in which there was a wedding taking place inside. One of the members, "Curly" Haviland, told me to come with him. We entered the church just as the wedding ceremony was ending. Curly told me to stand in front of the groom as he proceeded to through the bride over his shoulder. We then made our exit through the stunned and silent congregation. Curly and I placed the bride on the Duck. As the Duck began to pull away, the bride became concerned and her tears began to fall. She waved good-bye to her new husband and all the guests. Never fear it was all in fun and the bride was returned safe and sound leaving her with a few unusual wedding memories. [Note To The Bride; If you read this please contact us, as we would love to hear from you.]

Another incident occurred while we were filming a television ad for Gal's Bakery. The promotion was for "Wonderful Buns" consequently we had a gorgeous model aboard our sailing vessel. As we cruised around Elliot Bay, I was constantly interrupting filming with my incessant attempts to engage the model in conversation. The members were quite irritated by this behavior and one of my fellow candidates was ordered to throw me into the bay. Good pirate candidates obey without question, and in I went boots and all. As the ship sailed off into the distance the crew onboard was kind enough to throw me a life ring.

All in all it has been a terrific 19 year journey. Nothing compares with the joy we receive when we interact with children on the street, visit Children's Hospital or bring our unique brand of frivolity to the elderly in local nursing homes.

We refer to the Seafair Pirates as a brotherhood and as you can tell, we experience all the happiness, 'Joys and tears that a true family experiences.

Hope to see you at our Seafair Parades.
